Taking toddlers to the beach can be fun—if you come prepared. A little planning makes the day smoother for everyone.
Here I share my top tips from almost a decade of visiting various beaches in our region and other parts of the country and the world.
Venturing on a beach trip with a toddler demands sunscreen and sand toys and a smart plan to ensure a stress-free adventure.

1. Best Time to Go
For us, timing is essential when taking our kids and toddlers to the beach. The best times to avoid the extreme midday sun are mornings and afternoons.
Of course, depending on the season and the area, the sun around noon might not be that bad.
However, it’s a lot safer and more comfortable for your little ones to play in the sand without the peak sunlight.
We typically go in the afternoon, when the lifeguards are still on duty, but a lot of people have left for the day. I don’t like to take the kids to unguarded beaches.
If you have a beach with waves, heading there at or a little before low tide usually makes for much calmer waters. It often leaves a big shallow area at the water’s edge, which is excellent for the little ones.
2. Sand Removal From Belongings
Sand is fun at the beach, but it gets annoying very quickly when it’s still everywhere when you get back to your hotel. Here is my top tip for everybody, not just for toddlers:
Use bags made out of plastic mesh, put all toys in them after you’re done, give them a good shake, and all the sand goes through the holes.
Additional tip: Use Ziplock bags to keep and store anything you don’t want to get sand on. Read more about it here:
3. Sand Protection For Belongings
Yes, that’s correct. I didn’t mean sun protection, but sand protection, as it can even damage your belongings.
Buy some gallon-sized ziplock bags for every trip that involves a visit to the beach. We use them to hold our phones, pocket cameras, and keys so they won’t get wet or sandy. Often, the kids accidentally, or even on purpose, dump sand on our stuff.
Additionally, we use them to store the shoes that we don’t want to bring home full of sand. We put one shoe in each bag.
Extra tip: The Ziplock bags are also helpful for any wet clothes.

Using talc-free baby powder or cornstarch, which is slightly cheaper, is by far the best way to get sand off your body or your toddlers, of course.
It works amazingly well for toddlers and is much better than trying to rinse it off while they fight you or not removing it at all, which results in sand everywhere in the car and your home or hotel room.
Also, rinsing sand off with water leaves you wet and attracts even more sand.
Simply spread it on the body where needed and rub it in. The powder absorbs the excess moisture and releases the sand. Cornstarch or powder works exceptionally well and leaves little residue if used correctly.
5. Mark Your Spot With a Bright Flag or Kite

- 【Eco-friendly Materials】The octopus kites are made of waterproof cloth, which is durable and tear-resistant.
Beaches get crowded. It’s easy to lose track of where you set up.
A bright flag or small kite gives your family a clear marker. Plant it near your towels or chair. Kids can spot it from the water or playground.
You won’t waste time scanning rows of umbrellas. Your kids will know exactly where to return.
What could you use as a marker? A scarf? A balloon? Choose something that stands out.
6. Pack a Spray Bottle Filled With Fresh Water
- MULTIFUNCTIONAL BLISS- Liba's 16oz 4 pack lightweight spray bottles are semi-opaque and come equipped with an...
Saltwater dries sticky. Sand clings to it. You might not want to wait for the outdoor shower line.
A spray bottle filled with clean water gives you a quick rinse. Spray feet, hands, or faces before snacks or before getting in the car.
It’s lightweight and takes up little space in your bag. You control when and where you clean off.
How often do you wish for a quick rinse after leaving the water? This keeps you prepared without relying on public showers.
7. Bring a Small Inflatable Pool for Toddlers
- PACKAGE INCLUDES : Our Inflatable Kiddie Pool for Kids package includes one 48 inches wide & 46 inches tall bright...
Toddlers often get overwhelmed by waves and crowds.
A small inflatable pool gives them a safe, contained space to splash and play.
We fill it with a bucket of seawater and set it up under our beach umbrella.
It keeps them cool and entertained, and we don’t have to chase them down the shoreline.
It folds flat and fits easily in our beach bag.
8. Bring a Fitted Sheet for a Sand-Free Play Area

- Soft Microfiber Kids Sheet Set: this kids sheet set is crafted from premium double brushed microfiber with amazing...
Regular beach towels don’t block sand well. Fitted sheets work better.
Turn one upside down. Place bags or coolers in each corner to hold it open. It creates a raised edge that keeps most sand out.
We use this setup when our toddler naps or plays with toys. It’s not perfect, but it’s way better than towels.
You probably already have an old one at home. Keep it in the trunk for every beach trip.
9. Use a Pop-Up Tent for Shade and Naps
- Super Large Space: Size of 86.6"L x 59"W x 48"H, 30% bigger than other POP-UP tent at similar price, fits 3-4...
- UV Protection: All around covered with special 190T silver rubber polyester silk fabric to ensure the best sun...
Umbrellas move with the wind and don’t give full shade.
A pop-up tent blocks the sun from all angles. It’s a game-changer for babies and toddlers who need a break.
We bring a small one, just big enough for our youngest to nap or play in. It folds flat and fits under the stroller.
Even if your kids don’t nap, having a shaded area helps them last longer at the beach.
💡 Are pop-up tents allowed in the US? Yes, but regulations vary by location.
Examples of Beach Tent Regulations:
- Destin, Florida: Pop-up canopies are permitted during the day but must not be left overnight to avoid interfering with beach cleaning or turtle nesting activities.
- North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina: Small pop-up cabanas are allowed for infants and very small children. However, larger tents, tarps, and pavilions are banned year-round.
- Gulf Shores, Alabama: Tents larger than 7’x7′ and taller than 4′ are not allowed on public beaches unless placed in designated areas. All tents must be removed by an hour after sunset.
- Virginia Beach, Virginia: Pop-up tents up to 10’x10′ are allowed, provided they are open-sided and do not obstruct lifeguards’ views. Lifeguards may request removal if a tent poses a safety hazard.
10. Pre-Pack a Beach-Only Bag

- Travel Essentials for Beach Vacation: It is an extra-large beach bag that holds everything you & your family need....
We got tired of packing from scratch every time.
Now we keep a separate beach bag always ready. It has sunscreen, towels, toys, hats, swim diapers, baby powder, and a change of clothes.
After every trip, we clean and repack it. No scrambling at the last minute. No forgetting essentials.
It’s saved us so many times. Especially when we decide to go last-minute or have to get out the door fast.
BONUS: Extra Tip #1
Use a soft makeup brush to apply sunscreen to your toddler’s face. It gives even coverage and feels gentle on their skin.
Do it at home before you leave, so you’re not chasing them down on the sand. Keep the brush in your beach bag for quick touch-ups throughout the day.

Pack popsicles in a Yeti or Stanley to keep them frozen for hours at the beach.
These insulated containers work surprisingly well, even under the hot sun. Your kids get a cool treat, and you don’t have to rush to eat them before they melt.
We bring a few each trip, and they’ve become something our kids look forward to every time.
