Special March Tip: St. Patrickâs Day | Green River

There is one very special day in March: The Saturday before March 17 (St. Patrick’s Day). Every year, on this particular Saturday, when the parade takes place, you can also watch the dyeing of the river.
The dyeing process usually starts at 9 AM. on the morning of the parade. Orange powder is used, which turns green when mixed with water.
During the pandemic, it’s possible that they dye it without announcing the exact time to keep the crowds low.
The best spot to view this fascinating procedure is from the east side of Michigan Avenue or on Upper and Lower Wacker Drive (Google Maps Location) between Michigan Avenue and Columbus Drive.
Crowds in March

As the weather grows warmer, you’ll notice more crowds in Chicago. March is when more locals are spending time outside of their apartments, and tourists are only beginning to travel to Chicago to explore. There are not usually large crowds of people except for during the St. Patrickâs Day festivities when youâll encounter a good number of people.
Rates in March
Hotel rates are pretty reasonable during the month as well. As the month continues, rates slowly increase as demand increases. Of course, rates will be higher during the weekend during the St. Patrick’s Day activities.
Weather in April
April in Chicago offers mild days with an average high of 59°F (15°C). At this temperature, snow is melting quickly, and nearly all precipitation is rainfall. While this is not the wettest month you can expect between 9 and 12 days of rain.
The saying “April showers bring May flowers” is correct to describe Chicago in April weather because of the rain.
Average Temperatures
- Early April: 51°F (11°C)
- Mid-April: 56°F (13°C)
- Late April: 62°F (17°C)
The month starts with a high of 51°F and ends at a warm 62°F. You will love visiting Chicago in April as the temperatures are warm enough to do outdoor activities like walking, yet the breeze keeps you cool even in the sun.
Morning / Daytime / Evening Temperatures

Typical temperature progression during the day in April (average temperatures):
- Very early morning (6 AM): 45°F
- Morning: (8 AM): 47°F
- Afternoon (3 PM): 55°F

The temperatures stay in the high forties during the early morning, then shift into the highest temperature around 3 pm. Expect the average low to drop into the forties again in the evenings.
Quote from a local: It is really hit or miss in April. We have been outside in shorts and parkas in the same week during the month. Pants, jackets, layers. Always prepare for rain. However, early spring is an excellent time to visit the city as itâs not too crowded, and often pleasant.
Keep in mind, it can be quite chilly outside in the mornings and late evenings. We recommend checking the local forecast daily while visiting Chicago because the weather can abruptly change during the month. Additionally, check the 7-day forecast while packing your suitcase.
Rainfall
April in Chicago averages over a week of rain typically. As the month continues, the rainfall shifts from 2.4″ at the beginning to 3.2″ by the end of April. If you are traveling to Chicago this month, it’s best to bring rain gear like a waterproof jacket and boots.
Wind
April is known as a windy month, offering an average wind speed of about 13 MPH. If you are near Lake Michigan, the wind will be more apparent as the skyscrapers will not block it out. Thus it feels colder than at other places in the city.

Outfits in April

While you will need layers in Chicago during April (like with most months), much fewer are needed. Expect to bring a light jacket, t-shirts/light long sleeves, shorts or thinner pants like cotton, and waterproof shoes/boots.
Morning/Evening
It is chillier during the mornings and evenings, especially before the sun is out and after sunset. These are the times when you’ll need a jacket or even a thicker sweater. This changes depending on when you are visiting during the month.
Otherwise, an acceptable outfit is a long-sleeved shirt, medium to thin pants, waterproof shoes or boots, a jacket, and a hat if you run on the colder side.
Daytime

In the daytime, it feels much warmer in the sun. It’s typical to go out in the early morning with multiple layers only to discard your jacket by mid-afternoon. You can wear a long-sleeved shirt, medium-thin pants, waterproof shoes (like sneakers), and sunglasses to block out the reflected sun from the leftover snow.

Crowds in April

Expect crowds to be average in Chicago in April. As the month continues and the weather gets warmer, more people will be outside, including locals and tourists. During this time, crowds are handleable.
Rates in April
As the level of people in Chicago rises, hotel prices rise. Accommodation rates remain relatively reasonable, though the possibility of getting cheap deals begins to decline for Chicago hotels this month.
Tip: Make sure to search and bookmark the two biggest hotel sites and compare rates:
Weather in May
In Chicago, the average high temperature in May is 70°F, about 11°F higher than the average in April. There are slightly fewer rainy days (eight) in May compared to April. Even with fewer rainy days in May, itâs best to bring an umbrella when visiting during this month.
Average Temperature
Chicago in May weather begins with an average high of 62°F (17°C) at the beginning of the month. 71°F (22°C) is the average at the end of the month. Throughout May, the temperature slowly increases as the weather shifts toward summery June. The average rainfall is 3.4 inches.
In the mornings, youâll find pleasant temperatures in the low 60s. If youâre a runner, the early mornings are the best time to be out as you can avoid crowds and the hotter mid-day temps. The temperatures are slightly higher in the evenings as they stay around the mid-60s.
đĄ During the last week of May, sometimes we have days that feel summery as the temps can reach the 80s and even the low 90s.
However, these days are usually the rainiest, though the weather is generally still pleasant.
Average high temperatures in May:
- Early May: 62°F (17°C)
- Mid-May: 66°F(19°C)
- Late May: 71°F (22°C)
Typical temperature progression during a day in May:
- Morning (8 AM): 62°F
- Afternoon (3 PM): 68°F
- Evening (9 PM): 64°F
Rainfall
During the month, the average rainfall increases from 3.2″ to 3.7″. As mentioned, the rain typically increases as the temperature does in May. Most Chicagoans will carry an umbrella or wear water-resistant jackets on these days.
However, if the rain is light, I will often still walk around the city on foot. As a Chicago local, a little rain wonât deter me from getting outside after braving the chillier winter days!
Outfits in May
In early May you typically wear lighter pants or shorts and t-shirts with light jackets in Chicago. As the month continues, most Chicagoans begin exclusively wearing shorts and t-shirts or short sleeve shirts.
The only time I don’t wear shorts is on rainy days when I instead wear lighter pants (cotton or similar material), a thin long-sleeved tee, a rain jacket, and rain boots.
Tip: As May offers warm yet wet weather, you’ll want to bring water-resistant shoes like galoshes or rain boots. Even with water-resistant boots, it’s always a good idea to bring extra socks in case your boots leak.
Morning/Evening Clothing
When visiting Chicago, itâs always best to carry an extra jacket or layers, especially if youâre an early riser or late-night explorer. The mornings and evenings can be windy, with some areas of the city (near the lake) which seem to be even gustier.
As the mornings are generally in the 60s in May, you can keep warm with a light jacket or sweatshirt. Ensure your jacket or sweatshirt has a hood to help protect your face from the wind.
Most of the time, I travel with a jacket in the mornings and evenings in May. However, one time I believed the weather would stay clear for the entire day. Unfortunately, it was raining within a few minutes after I left the house, so I had to change my plans to run back and grab an umbrella.
Daytime Clothing
During the daytime, youâll find the weather warms up slightly. At this point in the day, you wonât typically need a jacket (unless itâs raining).
Must-pack (light rain jacket):
- Raincoats Material : Rain coats for women is made of 100%Polyester. It's waterproof and windproof, keeps you dry in...
- WATERPROOF& WINDPROOF RAINCOAT: This hooded rain jacket is made of super waterproof material, it's lightweight ,...
- 100% Waterproof: Water-repellent fully seam-sealed cycling rain jackets can work under over 5000mm pressure head....
If you plan to visit any museums during the day, I recommend bringing a coat as many museums keep the temperatures relatively low in the warmer months, and it’s easy to feel chilly inside.
However, outdoor activities should not require extra layers, especially if you’re doing something active such as running, playing frisbee or volleyball on the beach, etc.
What To Wear List
- Waterproof jacket (easiest way to stay dry in the rain)
- Waterproof boots/shoes (to help avoid soggy feet while in the city)
- Multiple pairs of socks
- Light sweaters/jackets (for cooler morning/evening temps)
- Jeans/pants
- Shorts
- T-shirts/lighter blouses & shirts
- Dresses (for special occasions, get-togethers, dinners)
- Hat/gloves (only for those who run on the colder side)
- Swimsuit, beach towel, sunscreen (if you get a warmer, sunnier day)
- Umbrella
- Sunglasses
Crowds in May
While visiting Chicago in May, you’ll notice itâs getting busier due to the warmer temperatures. This month, the number of visitors and locals participating in activities is rising. You may have to wait in some lines, though the crowds are only moderate and overall manageable.
Outdoor and indoor activities are popular, depending on whether it’s raining or sunny. You will notice larger crowds at any events occurring during the month. As many people in Chicago stay inside for most of the winter, these events allow people to mingle with other locals.
đĄ My favorite option for avoiding crowds is to arrive a few minutes before the museums open. This way, youâll be first in line when the doors unlock. Arriving early has saved me many times from having to wait in line.
This choice came about after one particular day when I had to wait an hour to enter the Art Institute. Another trick is finding alternative entrances, like using the Monroe Street entrance for the Art Institute, as the lines are shorter than at the main entrance.
Memorial Day Weekend: Generally, the Thursday and Friday before Memorial Day, traffic is heavier in the city as locals travel to the suburbs to visit their families. Many travelers spend the long weekend in Chicago during this weekend due to the number of activities available, so expect the lines at popular attractions to be a little longer.
Otherwise, you won’t notice significantly more crowds in Chicago on Memorial Day and the weekend. You’ll also find that traffic on Monday is more hectic, as many Chicagoans are traveling back to the city before the work week begins.

Chicago is known for its architecture, and seeing it by cruise is the ideal way. Youâll get to enjoy the beautiful skyline while learning about the architecture of the area. The best cruise for this experience is the Architecture River Cruise.
In colder months, most tours shut down as the water will be frozen in some areas, and the temperatures will be too frigid. However, some boats operate year-round with heated interiors, and in March you can enjoy a tour on the upper deck on a sunny day. Just dress accordingly and use layers!
Book your tickets as early as possible to ensure you get the day and time you want. Cruises/water tours can get pretty busy.
