September Weather Overview

The weather is mostly pleasant in September

If you’re planning to visit London from mainland Europe, temperatures will feel slightly lower in September. Nevertheless, the weather can be surprising, with many days of sunshine and temperatures climbing into the double digits.

As with any month in the UK, you do need to prepare for changes in the weather. There can be sudden spells of rain and wind with temperatures dropping particularly in the evening.

In London, days can be warm during this month and cooler in the evenings. The weather is mostly pleasant with highs of around 19°C (66°F) with a chance of 15 days of rainfall. In the mornings and evenings, the temperature can dip to around 14°C.

Despite the chance of rain, London offers plenty of things to do regardless of the weather, plus most attractions will have a shop nearby to buy an umbrella should you need one!

The average high temperature can also vary depending on the time of the month you go:

  • Early September: 21°C (70°F)
  • Mid-September: 19°C (66°F)
  • Late September: 17°C (63°F)
Weather Visitor Reports
  • “September has  typically mild and sunny days with a snap of early autumn in the evenings”
  • “Spent one week in London in mid-September. We had one day of misty clouds, not real rain, and the rest was mild, warm, dry, and sunny”
  • “September is usually a pleasant month in London: Still warm without being stifling and with the crowds easing off for the season.”

Daily temperature progression during a day in September:

  • Morning: 16°C
  • Afternoon: 20°C
  • Evening: 17°C
Rain

Throughout September, it is quite likely to experience rainfall at some point during your trip. It is estimated there is a 49% chance of rain during the first couple weeks of September which decreases slightly to 42% towards the end of September.

Typical rainfall in September reaches an average of 49mm, so remember to bring a waterproof jacket or umbrella and waterproof shoes.

Colder Times

No matter what time of the year you visit London, the mornings and evenings will always be cooler, and you need to be prepared for drops in temperatures. The temperature can dip between 12°C and 14°C compared to 17°C and 21°C in the daytime.

Typical daily temperature progression during a day in mid-September:

  • Early Morning: 14°C
  • Morning: 16°C
  • Afternoon: 20°C
  • Evening: 18°C
Chances of Snow

The chance of experiencing snowfall during September in London is basically zero. The last time it snowed in London during September was in the year 1885.

What to Wear and Pack | Overview for September

We recommend that you pack different outfits for the daytime and the evening. Layer up in the morning with a T-shirt or long-sleeve top and a jacket. Then towards the afternoon, you can usually lose the jacket and enjoy the warmer weather.

Throughout September in London t-shirts, shorts, skirts, and dresses with a light jacket will usually suffice in the daytime.

During the evenings, you will need to wear trousers, sweaters, and a thicker jacket if you are going to be outdoors and for traveling. The weather can sometimes be unpredictable in September, so be prepared for rain one day and sunshine the next!

💡 Typical London attire for September would consist of a jacket, such as a denim or leather jacket, layered over a t-shirt or dress. The style in London is quite laid back and comfortable during the day.

As visitors often walk everywhere, flat, comfortable shoes are key to navigating the city. In fall, the typical style of footwear is usually a pair of classic leather boots or trendy sneakers.

Jeans are often worn around London during the day and are often dressed up for going out at night in September. However, if the weather is set to be sunny expect Londoners to be making the most of the heat with simple dresses, and relaxed t-shirts paired with long shorts.

London is also a very walkable city with many attractions close to each other so expect to get plenty of steps in during your trip. Here are my recommendations for footwear for September.

Sandals are often worn in the first week of the month when the weather in London during September is warm.

In recent years, early September has been hot, with temperatures in the 20s (degrees Celsius), so people often wear comfortable open-toe shoes or sandals in the city.

Sneakers, or trainers as the British refer to them, are widely popular in London and offer comfort and versatility. You can choose to bring a smart pair that will work for walking around during the day and going out at night, or choose a brightly coloured pair to showcase your personality.

Boots are another popular choice in the city with leather laced-up boots or Chelsea boots worn by many. A good, comfortable, and waterproof pair of boots are ideal for the cool, wet weather that often arrives during September.

Detailed Outfit Guide | From Early to Late September

The month of September is known as a transitional month as the season changes from summer to autumn, so the weather can be both sunny and chilly.

SHOP NOW: Early Fall Outfits for London | Amazon

To make sure you are prepared for your vacation to London, I will share with you everything you need to pack for a trip to the city in September.

Typical evening wear in London during September includes jeans and a sweater with a light jacket. Remember the temperatures can drop in the evening and the weather can be varied during September, even early in the month. One evening you may only need a sweater then the next evening you may need a sweater and a jacket to keep warm, especially if it rains, so come prepared.

Early September

Early September is warm with summer-like temperatures quite common in the first week. Average temperatures for early September are around 21°C, which can feel quite warm in London.

Jeans and a T-shirt with a smart pair of trainers will keep you comfortable and stylish in the city. For women, a light dress and a cardigan or jeans with a blouse or T-shirt will be ideal for daywear.

For men long shorts and a shirt or T-shirt will keep you cool and comfortable, and children can wear similar outfits.

A light jacket such as a denim jacket or a cotton trench coat is ideal for covering up during early September when there is a breeze in the air and will be ideal in the evening when the temperatures drop.

Make sure to also bring a hat, such as a baseball hat to add a sporty feel to your outfits and to also protect you from the September sun.

Mid-September

Mid-September sees the weather getting milder as cooler temperatures begin. During the day it can still be sunny however a colder breeze brings the beginning of autumn. If you are visiting London during mid-September you will need some layers to keep warm.

Bring long-sleeve t-shirts, medium-weight sweaters and a rainproof jacket to protect from the wind and the rain.

Late September

Late September has much colder temperatures compared with the beginning of the month with a higher chance of rain. Late September is when the weather can be the most changeable with cold rainy days followed by sunny warm temperatures.

Although you will still get plenty of sunshine hours during the day don’t be fooled into thinking it will be warm outside. Be prepared by bringing sweaters, waterproof footwear and warm rainproof jackets but still pack your sunglasses.

More Personal Tips for September

As a Londoner who lives in the city, I have experienced glorious warm weather during September, especially in the first week of the month when summer-like temperatures can be expected.

Looking back on previous years we are usually in summer wear the first week of September wearing shorts and dresses. The weather in September is warm and comfortable, and extreme weather conditions are rare.

However, in 2023 London did have a heatwave during September when temperatures reached 33.5°C and everyone was very hot.

TOP TIP! Browse trendy early fall outfits on Amazon

Despite this, heatwaves in early autumn are uncommon. However, you should still expect moderately warm weather early in September and cooler autumn weather towards the end of the month.

Prepare for weather changes by bringing light layers and easy-to-adjust outfits. For early September, expect some sun, so bring sunwear such as sunhats, sunglasses, and SPF for daytime. If you are coming in late September bring a waterproof coat so you are ready for any sudden rain showers or chilly breezes.

The city of London is known for being very fashionable, however, day-to-day fashion in London is smart casual with an emphasis on dressing comfortably.

Layering

When it comes to keeping warm when the weather turns cold in September, bring cardigans, zip-up jumpers or hoodies to layer under jackets. This allows you to adjust your outfit depending on the temperature and feel more comfortable as you navigate the city.

I like to wear a smart trench coat layered over light knitwear as a versatile option for September and I’m often in a pair of trendy sneakers as I walk a lot around the city. My husband wears a light puffer jacket with a hood in late September and wears dark jeans, trainers, a shirt and smart boots for evening wear.

  • Hats: Bring a baseball hat for early October to keep the warm autumn sun off your face.
  • Knit hats: A light-knitted hat will keep you warm during windy days in the city or can be more convenient than an umbrella during very light rain.

Most Londoners wear jeans during autumn so a good pair of jeans with a T-shirt, trainers and a light jacket will keep you feeling comfortable during the day.

Alternatively, women can wear a long dress with a cardigan and a light jacket over the top. To combat the rain that London is known for, carry a compact umbrella or bring a foldable raincoat in your bag when you go out.

A typical daytime outfit in London consists of trousers, such as jeans or cargo pants, with a warm sweater or hoodie and a lightweight rainproof jacket. Women can still wear dresses and skirts however you will want to bring a light pair of tights for the chillier temperatures.

As the wetter weather creeps in, footwear in the city transitions from sneakers to boots. A good pair of waterproof boots that are comfortable to walk in will keep you warm and dry during October. If your boots are smart enough you will also be able to wear them in the evening with smarter trousers, skirts or dresses.

Later October

Late October sees the temperatures drop with more rain and colder daily temperatures. There may still be plenty of sunny days, however despite the sun it will feel cold with stronger breezes. Expect temperatures of around 13°C (55°F) with an increase in rain showers.

More Personal Tips for October

As someone who has lived in London for over 20 years, October is a great time to visit the city. During October the city has a cozy atmosphere with leaves falling and people enjoying seasonal warm drinks from coffee shops.

Londoners in particular are fond of their sweaters, and October is the perfect time to showcase your stylish fall outfits before it gets too cold.

Trench coats and long mac raincoats are popular in London paired with stylish trainers or leather boots. Women often wear skirts and dresses in October, accessories with tights to keep warm on chilly days.

If you are coming early in October bring some light outfit options such as short-sleeved t-shirts and floral dresses in anticipation of the warmer temperatures. However, still pack plenty of layers to cover up with if it gets cold. Whereas mid to late October sees colder weather which requires a warmer jacket and those cozy warm sweaters.

Of course, it is no doubt going to rain in October and the month is known for its sudden downpours which will soak you if you don’t have the right clothes. Raincoats, waterproof shoes and a trusty umbrella are must-pack items for October in London.

Although the rain can be disappointing it surely doesn’t stop Londoners and with some careful planning, you will still have an amazing time in London during October.

  • More Personal Tips for November 💡

November Weather Overview

November is the month before the start of winter, so it will feel cold, and there will be days of rainfall, particularly towards the end of the month. However, it is not quite wintering yet, so you will find that some days are dry, crisp and enjoyable.

The weather during November in London is mostly cool, with highs of around 10°C (50°F) and potential lows of 5°C (41°F). The average high temperature also varies depending on the time of the month. There is a 35% chance of rain on an average day.

Although, compared to previous months, the temperature dips in November you can still have a wonderful break in London, as long as you wrap up warm. Walking along the South Bank, or through the picturesque London streets as the leaves fall, the air will feel fresh and cool, and if you have a thick jacket on, you won’t feel too cold.

The start of November is usually slightly warmer than the end of the month:

  • Early November: 13°C (55°F)
  • Mid-November: 12°C (54°F)
  • Late November: 10°C (50°F)

Despite the temperatures being cooler towards the end of November, you will be able to enjoy some early festive activities as London comes alive with Christmas preparations.

Festive holiday attractions pop up across the city, and the Christmas street lights are turned on throughout the month, creating a warm and cozy atmosphere.

Rain

You can expect a 35% chance of rain during the month. Skies will be cloudy or mostly cloudy on most days, with some rainfall likely on approximately 17 days.

Typical rainfall in November reaches an average of 52mm, so remember to bring a waterproof jacket or umbrella.

Colder Times

Temperatures throughout the days in November can be varied, similar to most months throughout the year. Colder times of the day will be the morning and evening, with temperatures increasing slightly in the afternoon.

Typical daily temperature progression during a day in mid-November:

  • Early Morning: 7°C (45°F)
  • Morning: 9°C (48°F)
  • Afternoon: 12°C (54°F)
  • Evening: 8°C (46°F)
Chances of Snow

The chance of experiencing snowfall during November in London is very unlikely. Although there can be frost and cold temperatures, snow does not usually fall until January.

In the unlikely case of snowfall, it will typically happen at the end of the month with a chance of 5%.

November visitor weather reports:
  • “London weather in November is generally damp. It is unlikely to get a good frost, but I would never rule it out. Snow is very unlikely in November. If you get a clear day, it will be fresh and crisp. For me, this month is a perfect time to visit.”
  • “A good waterproof coat and shoes are essential, but you also may have no rain when staying a few days only.”

November Packing and Outfit Overview

As November can experience cool temperatures, rain as well as sunnier days, it is important to pack for all kinds of weather. Wearing a long-sleeve shirt, jeans, and jacket in the daytime will keep you warm, and pack a hat or scarf in your backpack in case you get colder in the evening.

Throughout November in London, wearing t-shirts, long-sleeve tops, trousers, long dresses, and a thick jacket will be ideal for most of the day. The weather in November will be cold and wet, so wear layers and be prepared for rainfall with an umbrella or a waterproof coat.

Our coat recommendations for the typical wet and cold days in November:

However, there can be surprising dry days where the sun will come out, but this won’t increase the temperature too much, so you still need to wear appropriate clothing.

For going out, bring a purse or small bag. For longer city explorations during the day, we always use a larger bag for water, wallet, phone, and hand sanitizer.

Tip: London is one of the world’s hot spots where tourists are getting pickpocketed! That’s why we highly recommend a bag with anti-theft features (see our two tips above!).

💡 Visitor tip: Layers are a good idea in November. Pack jumpers, cardigans, and waterproof jackets to wear on top of a long-sleeved top. I recommend thick socks worn with comfortable shoes because you will be doing plenty of walking in London.

Basic Packing list:
  • T-shirts/ long-sleeve tops

The temperatures during November in London are gradually changing, with warmer temperatures during October every year. However, cold temperatures are still common and you should pack some cold-weather accessories in case the weather is cold during your trip.

Scarves: A light scarf will help to keep you warm when the wind is cold, and will provide an additional warm layer which can be kept in your bag should you need it.

Knit hats: A knitted hat will keep you warm during cold rainy days in the city and can be more convenient than an umbrella during light rain.

Gloves: As the weather can get very chilly in November a light pair of gloves are a great way to keep warm, especially during late November when the temperatures drop.

Nightwear

As the weather gets colder you will need some cozy outfits to keep you warm during the night. Most hotels and private accommodations turn on the central heating during November, however, it can still get chilly so bring a warm set of pyjamas with long sleeves.

Nightclubs: London has a variety of nightclubs, however almost all nightclubs will refuse entry if you are wearing sportswear, caps, hats and trainers. If you plan to go clubbing, men should wear smart shirts, smart trousers and dark leather smart shoes. Whereas women usually wear short dresses, or trousers with a dressy top paired with smart flats or heeled shoes.

Theatre: Most theatres have a casual dress code and dark jeans with a smart shirt or blouse are acceptable. However, if you are planning to go to a fancy restaurant after or it is a special occasion you can dress up if you want to. Many people like to get cocktails so dress in smart-casual wear which includes smart trousers and a shirt or a fancy dress to go out after the show.

High-end restaurants and bars. If you plan to dine out at one of London’s classy restaurants, bring some smart casual clothes with you. For men, this means smart trousers, smart shirts and a blazer/suit jacket. For women, this can include smart trousers and a blouse with heels or a stylish dress with heels or smart flats.

💡 Visitor tip: If you plan to get dressed up to go out at night bring a smart warm jacket to keep you warm in cold November evening temperatures. A smart trench coat or classic leather jacket are great options.

More Personal Tips for November

I grew up in North England where the weather is considerably colder and wetter than in London. After living in London for 20 years, November in London can be cold and certainly wet, however, the city landscape shelters you somewhat making the wind and rain during late autumn easier to cope with.

Despite this, ensure that you pack essential cold-weather items such as a warm waterproof jacket, a beanie hat and insulated boots that are comfortable to walk in.

If you plan to stay in the city centre and have lots of indoor activities lined up (such as museums, galleries, shopping etc) bring layers to wear so you can adjust them when you go indoors.

As Christmas creeps in during late November popular stores such as Liberty, Fortnum and Mason and Harrods will get busy. You can expect weekend crowds in popular areas such as Covent Garden and Oxford Street so avoid these areas on Saturdays and Sundays if possible.

London during November is exciting as the weather changes and everyone switches into winter mode, with warm sweaters and cozy coats. For the ultimate British experience in London seek out a traditional pub and embrace the cold weather with a hearty winter English dish. Pie, mash and gravy or a traditional Sunday Roast will be sure to warm you up and raise your spirits while sightseeing in this iconic city.
