Detailed Outfit Guide | From Early to Late September
The month of September is known as a transitional month as the season changes from summer to autumn, so the weather can be both sunny and chilly.
SHOP NOW: Early Fall Outfits for London | Amazon
To make sure you are prepared for your vacation to London, I will share with you everything you need to pack for a trip to the city in September.
Typical evening wear in London during September includes jeans and a sweater with a light jacket. Remember the temperatures can drop in the evening and the weather can be varied during September, even early in the month. One evening you may only need a sweater then the next evening you may need a sweater and a jacket to keep warm, especially if it rains, so come prepared.
Early September
Early September is warm with summer-like temperatures quite common in the first week. Average temperatures for early September are around 21°C, which can feel quite warm in London.
Jeans and a T-shirt with a smart pair of trainers will keep you comfortable and stylish in the city. For women, a light dress and a cardigan or jeans with a blouse or T-shirt will be ideal for daywear.
For men long shorts and a shirt or T-shirt will keep you cool and comfortable, and children can wear similar outfits.
A light jacket such as a denim jacket or a cotton trench coat is ideal for covering up during early September when there is a breeze in the air and will be ideal in the evening when the temperatures drop.
Make sure to also bring a hat, such as a baseball hat to add a sporty feel to your outfits and to also protect you from the September sun.
Mid-September
Mid-September sees the weather getting milder as cooler temperatures begin. During the day it can still be sunny however a colder breeze brings the beginning of autumn. If you are visiting London during mid-September you will need some layers to keep warm.
Bring long-sleeve t-shirts, medium-weight sweaters and a rainproof jacket to protect from the wind and the rain.
Late September
Late September has much colder temperatures compared with the beginning of the month with a higher chance of rain. Late September is when the weather can be the most changeable with cold rainy days followed by sunny warm temperatures.
Although you will still get plenty of sunshine hours during the day don’t be fooled into thinking it will be warm outside. Be prepared by bringing sweaters, waterproof footwear and warm rainproof jackets but still pack your sunglasses.
Personal Experiences and Tips
As a Londoner who lives in the city, I have experienced glorious warm weather during September, especially in the first week of the month when summer-like temperatures can be expected.
Looking back on previous years we are usually in summer wear the first week of September wearing shorts and dresses. The weather in September is warm and comfortable, and extreme weather conditions are rare.
However, in 2023 London did have a heatwave during September when temperatures reached 33.5°C and everyone was very hot.
TOP TIP! Browse trendy early fall outfits on Amazon
Despite this, heatwaves in early autumn are uncommon. However, you should still expect moderately warm weather early in September and cooler autumn weather towards the end of the month.
Prepare for weather changes by bringing light layers and easy-to-adjust outfits. For early September, expect some sun, so bring sunwear such as sunhats, sunglasses, and SPF for daytime. If you are coming in late September bring a waterproof coat so you are ready for any sudden rain showers or chilly breezes.
The city of London is known for being very fashionable, however, day-to-day fashion in London is smart casual with an emphasis on dressing comfortably.
Layering
When it comes to keeping warm when the weather turns cold in September, bring cardigans, zip-up jumpers or hoodies to layer under jackets. This allows you to adjust your outfit depending on the temperature and feel more comfortable as you navigate the city.
I like to wear a smart trench coat layered over light knitwear as a versatile option for September and Iām often in a pair of trendy sneakers as I walk a lot around the city. My husband wears a light puffer jacket with a hood in late September and wears dark jeans, trainers, a shirt and smart boots for evening wear.
Bonus: 5 Must-Do Things to Do in September
Please try to do at least one of the following activities in September. Number 5 is our absolute favorite.
1. River Thames Evening Cruise with Bubbly
- Location: Westminster Pier, London
- Price: £32 per person
- Personal Rating: 5/5
Sipping on bubbly, enjoying delicious canapĆ©s, and being serenaded by a live musician while gliding along the River Thames was magical. Seeing Londonās landmarks beautifully illuminated in the evening made the experience even more special.
Why September? The weather is still pleasant!
Helpful Tip: As it can get slightly cooler on the river, it’s a good idea to bring along an extra layer.
2. Have Dinner in the Clouds at Duck and Waffle
- Location: 110 Bishopsgate 40th Floor, Heron Tower, London
- Price Range: $$
- Personal Rating: 5/5
Once we found the building, we whizzed up to the 40th Floor in a glass lift, which isn’t for the faint-hearted. The food was amazing and the entire restaurant had a chilled and relaxed feel. Of course, the views over London were spectacular which made the meal even more enjoyable.
The views across London are the most romantic at sunset.
Helpful Tip: Booking for the restaurant opens exactly two months ahead of time. So you have to be organized to get a table.
3. Take a romantic aerial walk above the famous O2 Building
- Location: The O2, North Greenwich, London
- Price Range: $
- Personal Rating: 4/5
It was so much fun walking over the roof of the O2. Our guide was so lovely and told us so much about the London skyline, made us feel safe, and even took a few photos for us. It was an amazing experience to do as a couple.
This is a great summertime activity in June, and depending on what you want to see, you can choose a daytime or a twilight walk.
Helpful Tip: Wear comfortable clothes and shoes. You will be wearing a harness so ladies should avoid wearing a dress. Even if the weather is warm, take a light jacket as the rooftop can get chilly.
4. Stroll Through the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew
- Location: Richmond, London
- Price: £17.50 per adult
- Personal Rating: 4.5/5
The diversity of the gardens was astounding, from the Palm House filled with exotic rainforest plants to the Japanese Garden which was tranquil and serene. It was the perfect place for a peaceful day out.
Helpful Tip: Don’t forget to check out the Treetop Walkway for a unique perspective of the gardens from 18 meters high.
5. Visit the Borough Market
- Location: Southwark, London
- Price: Free
- Personal Rating: 4.5/5
The bustling atmosphere and the wide variety of delicious food and drink on offer made for a fun day out.
August is perfect because of the pleasant temps.
Tip: The market is less crowded in the morning on weekdays.
