March

Spring sees warmer temperatures and the sun’s return, which is ideal for tourists looking to explore the city. Visiting London during spring is a great time to avoid the large summer crowds and enjoy the warm spring temperatures.

As a Londoner, I love seeing how the city comes back to life after winter. One of my favorite places to see the arrival of spring is at the famous Kew Gardens, which is full of beautiful flowers and trees in bloom.

As March sees the transition from winter to spring, the weather is very changeable. Early March temperatures in London are cold, with average lows expected to be around 8°C (46°F).  You will need layers, a cozy sweater, and a warm jacket.

Average daily temperatures in March:

  • Early March: 10°C (50°F)
  • Mid-March: 11°C (52°F)
  • Late March: 13°C (55°F)
What to pack:

London fashion is versatile and trendy, although the city has a general casual vibe when it comes to dressing. The cold temperatures continue during March, and a typical London outfit includes well-fitted jeans, leather ankle boots, and a warm coat.

To prepare for the cold weather, you will need to pack plenty of cozy layers for a vacation to London during March. Warm sweaters, a rainproof jacket, and warm boots or trainers will prepare you for the spring weather in England.

However, as March progresses and sunnier days arrive, you can lighten up the layers, introduce playful colours, and a pair of sunnies. Spring’s changing temperatures mean a sweater or cardigan is a must-have for layering over tees and under jackets.

Londoner tip: Some days you won’t need a jacket and a sweater alone is perfect, other days you will need them both to keep away the chilly breeze. As evening falls, the temperature drops, so you’ll want to layer up to stay warm.

Below is a great guide for what to pack for a London trip during March.

April

By April, the weather in London is milder with sunnier, warmer days and longer daytime hours.  Visiting London during spring is a great time to see the city, as it comes to life with bursts of sunshine and warmer temperatures.

Rain showers are still expected throughout April, however, it doesn’t stop the many fantastic London Easter events from taking place.

Early April can be cold with average temperatures around 12°C (53°F), so pack plenty of layers and a light sweater to wear under jackets.

Average daily temperatures in April:

  • Early April: 13°C (55°F)
  • Mid-April: 14°C (57°F)
  • Late April: 16°C (61°F)
What to pack:

To make the most of your trip to London, you need to dress for the weather. Choose travel outfits that embrace London fashion and protect you from the changeable April weather conditions. The term ‘April Showers’ is well used in British culture and refers to the common wet weather expected during April.

Despite the rain, Londoners embrace the brighter weather and inject playful colors and spring prints, such as florals or stripes, into their outfits. I enjoy mixing spring colors, such as a bright sweater or a scarf, with my winter wear to help transition into the new season.

Late April is warm with an average temperature of 16°C (60°F), making it ideal for lightening up your layers. A colorful t-shirt paired with a light jacket and lighter-wash jeans creates a stylish London outfit during April.

Londoner tip: April weather can be quite wet, so be prepared with a rainproof jacket and an umbrella. It’s not quite time to bring out the sandals either, make sure your footwear is comfortable and waterproof.

May

London is full of life during May as the warmer weather attracts more visitors to the city. I love the happy buzz in the capital, and higher temperatures mean lighter layers.

Average temperatures during May are around 17°C (62°F), making it a great time to explore London, enjoying the laid-back atmosphere that the warmer weather brings.

Average daily temperatures in May:

  • Early May: 16°C (61°F)
  • Mid-May: 17°C (62°F)
  • Late May: 19°C (66°F)
What to pack:

A relaxed t-shirt, or shirt, paired with ankle-length jeans and sneakers is an ideal outfit to sightsee in London during May. Early May can be cool, with sudden rain showers as we move away from April, so come prepared with clothing that you can layer and an umbrella.

On warmer days from mid to late May, women wear dresses with light cardigans and men wear tees with shorts to enjoy the warm sunny weather. With variable weather, it can be challenging to know what to pack for a vacation to London.

In general, the weather during May in London is enjoyable with summer-like temperatures. There are fewer crowds in the city than during summer, and the longer daytime hours make it perfect for discovering London’s famous sights.

Londoner tip: My advice would be to bring light layers, including sweaters and cardigans, trousers for the colder days, and dresses or shorts for warm days. A light jacket, such as a trench coat or raincoat, is essential for rainy days and evenings when the temperatures drop.
