Weather Overview

Average high temperatures in December in Miami, Florida. With 76°F it’s slightly cooler towards the end of the month.

The weather in Miami during the month of December is perfect for those who are looking to escape the cold winter temperatures. It’s no surprise there are so many seasonal residents and visitors present during this month due to the warm weather and bright sunny skies.

In Miami, the average high temperature in December is ranging from 76 to 79°F (24-26°C). It is the beginning of the dry season, with blue skies accompanied by a crisp breeze. There is little rainfall this month, with an average of 1.4-4.2 inches.

💡 December is a great month to hit the beaches with temperatures in the mid or high-70s. However, it’s possible that a cold front hits Miami for two or three days, causing a temperature drop to the mid-60s. But that’s the exception.

December in Miami | Average High Temperatures:

  • Early December: 79°F (26°C)
  • Mid-December: 78°F (26 °C)
  • Late December: 76°F (24°C)

Temperatures remain relatively stable throughout the month.

Rainfall

December is during the dry season and is one of the driest months of the year for Miami. It only tends to rain seven days throughout the month, averaging 1.4 inches. Very rarely do occasional rain showers exceed 0.5 inches and are usually very brief.

Rainfall and unpredictable weather shouldn’t be a worry during December in Miami. You can relax on the beach, enjoy water sports, and spend your days outdoors while being stress-free with blue and sunny skies.

Heat/Humidity

Miami’s southern location brings high humidity levels throughout the entire year. However, humidity doesn’t tend to be an issue this month. The dry and breezy air and slightly lower temperatures keep the effects of humidity at a low.

The humidity in December tends to peak in the mornings, averaging 86%, and drop in the afternoon to an average of 59%. Due to the lack of rain and drier climate, the high humidity levels in the morning hours aren’t as noticeable this month.

Even though it is December and the humidity is lower, it is still important to stay hydrated throughout the day and apply sunscreen frequently when being on the beach or outdoors for long hours.

Daily Weather Progression

December tends to have cooler temperatures in the mornings and evenings, but the weather conditions tend to stay rather consistent throughout most days.

Typical daily temperature progression:

  • Early Morning (6 AM): 68°F
  • Early Afternoon (1 PM): 78°F
  • Evening (10 PM): 72°F

Mornings tend to be chilly, but still on the warmer side and filled with sunshine. Leading into warmer temperatures in the later morning and afternoon hours.

Evenings: The breeze from the coastline is more noticeable in the evenings, and the temperatures slightly decrease again once the sun goes down.

Water Temperature

Miami has some of the warmest waters in Florida. However, the month of December brings cooler waters to its coastline.

The water during December in Miami is usually comfortable enough to swim and dive in the afternoon. However, for some visitors, it’s too cold, especially in the morning hours. The average ocean temperature is 75°F (24°C).

💡 Local opinion: The ocean is too chilly for most locals during December.  I prefer at least a Shorty Wet Suit if I was spending more than a few minutes in the water. However, many from the northern states and Europeans will be in the water. It just depends on what you are used to.

December brings some of the most ideal diving and snorkeling water conditions, and there is a multitude of great diving spots all around Miami. It is also a popular time for boating activities due to more winds and less rainfall.

Packing Tips | December Outfit Guide

December in Florida is the month for layering clothes. Wear long sleeves and pants during the chilly mornings and evenings.  Afternoons are often sunny and warm enough for shorts and t-shirts.

💡 Long sleeves and pants could easily be needed in the mornings and after the sunsets in Florida during December. But be prepared to shed your jacket or sweater by noon or midafternoon.

During the month of December, the clothing items in your suitcase should consist of:

  • Shorts
  • Leggings/Capris
  • T-shirts & V-necks
  • Light sweater or Jacket
  • Jeans (if wanted)
  • Bathing Suit/Swim Trunks
  • Bathing Suit Cover Up

Additional items to pack:

  • Sunscreen
  • Umbrella
  • Hat
  • Sunglasses
  • Water Bottle -stay hydrated!
  • Small backpack or fanny pack
  • Water shoes
Packing Mistake

Don’t pack boots: While snow boots and Uggs might be winter staples up north, they’re overkill for a Miami winter. Instead, pack light and save suitcase space. While Miami doesn’t see snow, its winter winds can be a little chillier at times. Opt for compact choices like sneakers or stylish, lighter boots.

A Typical Day

The typical day will depend on how far north or south you are in the state. Regardless, plan on wearing a variety of layers to be prepared for whatever the weather brings.

9 AM

While early morning temps won’t be Florida’s typical tropical surroundings, they can be warm and humid enough for you to walk around in shorts and a T-shirt, especially if you come from a snowy climate around this time of year.

If you feel chilly in the lower morning temps, plan on loose-fitting pants and a tank top layered under a sweater or jacket, but keep in mind you will be doing plenty of warming up in the afternoon.

12 PM

By lunchtime, especially if you are walking around to explore the sights, you should be feeling much warmer than you were in the morning. You might be comfortable peeling off your outermost layer, especially if you are located further south.

3 PM

Daytime temperatures normally peak at this time. If you are still walking around with all your layers, you will definitely be warm enough to go down to your base layer. If you’re further north, you may still want to keep a light sweater or long-sleeve tied around your waist or in your bag for any possible chills.

6 PM

Your style of attire will not have to change too much from loose or short-sleeved clothing. If you are a colder person, plan on wearing pants instead of shorts. Regardless of how you feel in the outdoor weather, plan on bringing a jacket or sweater for your time indoors.

9 PM

You will want to be wearing a warm outer layer for the late night temperatures.

While visiting the northern part of the state will require a few pairs of jeans and pants, packing your suitcase for Miami will require more discretion.

Jeans can be a good option for the morning, but keep in mind that you may grow uncomfortable during the warmer, humid afternoons.

That’s why I recommend bringing lighter summer jeans:

You will likely be more comfortable with a suitcase full of T-shirts and shorts for Miami, but plan on bringing at least one or two pairs of jeans/pants for when temperatures are cooler in the evenings.

💡 Without comfortable walking shoes, you end up with blisters and hurting feet at the end of the day. Please don’t wear flip-flops in theme parks, as these also run a risk of flying away on the rides.

Rain Protection

While rain and thunderstorms are unlikely, they are not impossible, especially in South Florida. Keeping a small umbrella handy is always a good idea.

When staying in Florida, we always keep a sweater or light jacket handy throughout the day for dining out in indoor restaurants. Since the temperature outdoors is mainly hot, the air conditioners are on full blast. If you get cold easily, this is a great tip to keep in mind.

This is important to consider if you’re traveling to the southern end of the state and are packing for warm weather. All fans and air conditioning units will be on full blast the further south you go, so even if you’re planning to take advantage of the warm winter weather in shorts and sandals, bring a spare sweater.

Whether your plans include spending hours at the theme parks, having a beach day, or exploring some of Florida’s historical sites, a fanny pack or small backpack will be an essential item for your trip.

Tip: Make sure you stock your bag with a refillable water bottle, poncho, sunscreen, a phone charger, hand sanitizer, and your Mickey Mouse ears for Disney to be ready for whatever the day brings!

Prepare for Anything

While winter time will make many tourists think they don’t need to worry about heat-related illnesses, many people underestimate the humidity that hangs on the state year-round, especially when they come from colder or drier climates. Florida’s tropics are always something to consider when you plan to spend the day walking around, going on rides, or resting in the sand.

We suggest always bringing some medicine and electrolytes to treat and prevent headaches and dehydration. People who especially aren’t used to the weather will likely do some sweating, and replacing the salt and minerals your body is losing in your sweat is very important to stay healthy.

Sun protection should still be a priority for everyone, even in December. The Florida sun is different from the rest of the United States – as the southernmost state in the country apart from Hawai’i, the sun’s rays strike Florida at a higher angle, which increases its ability to heat in both the summer and winter.

Tip: Besides sunscreen always bring a baseball hat (see our recommendations above)

This means that even if you’re in a cooler northern city, protecting your skin with sunscreen or long sleeves and pants is a must. Choose a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher to prevent burning. Also, keep a hat and sunglasses handy!

Tip: Applying sunscreen in the morning before your Florida excursions won’t be enough if you plan on being out all day. Reapply at least every two hours, especially if you are sweating or getting your skin wet.

The southern beaches are great year-round for swimming. If you’re planning to swim, pack more than one bathing suit so you always have a dry one ready to go!

Beach tip: If you visit the beach and have plans in the area afterward, most establishments in close proximity to a beach are swim-attire-friendly. Always double-check, but you shouldn’t have any problems if you want to grab a bite to eat after the beach in a swimsuit and cover-up or T-shirt and swim trunks.

Jewelry

Less jewelry is more, especially if you have a busy day of fun planned. Stick to simple chains with a secure clasp, especially when going in the ocean or on theme park rides. Avoid rings, earrings, or other pieces of jewelry that can get lost or caught on something.

Feel free to wear all the pieces you like when exploring the nightlife, especially in Florida’s bustling, bright cities like Miami or Orlando.

Prepare Well for Your Night Out

We recommend wearing comfortable shoes when going out, but that might not be the first option if you want to dress up. If wearing heels, pick a pair with a thicker base or lower heel so you can feel comfortable wearing them all night.

Just in case, bring a pair of thick socks in your bag if you’re wearing uncomfortable heels. Since you likely won’t be able to carry around a spare pair of shoes if your feet get tired, socks will give you the option to retire your heels and keep you from walking around barefoot.

This is especially true if you’re doing a lot of walking in the evening, like bar hopping or going to a concert.

Personal Experiences

Prepare your hair for humidity: If you have long hair, bring extra headbands or hair ties. Even if you go during the “cooler months,” being outdoors all day long means whatever humidity there is will make it feel like your hair is glued to your neck and forehead, and I couldn’t believe how frizzy my curls got no matter how much product I put in them.

I needed to keep my hair in a bun or in a ponytail most of my trip, and I don’t know what I would have done without extra scrunchies and some gel in my suitcase.

Bring extra shoes: Pack an extra pair of walking shoes!

We saw some rain when I visited central Florida and there were puddles everywhere. I had to splash through some that came up to my ankles when I was running to get out of the rain.

My sneakers were soaked by the afternoon and I didn’t have another pair to walk around in the next day when they were still damp. I had to buy a new pair of shoes – save yourself the expense and bring a spare!

It’s the little things: If there’s one thing I would tell someone to bring that they likely overlooked in their luggage, it’s a small, portable fan!

Even if you’re not expecting very hot or muggy weather, many people find themselves getting overwhelmed by the humidity.

Bringing a mini-fan I bought on Amazon kept me from being grouchy while waiting in lines to get on the park rides, many of which were outdoors and packed with other people! It wasn’t as strong as air conditioning, but even a little breeze helped me feel better.

Beach Guide

A trip to Miami in December isn’t complete unless you spend a day or two at the beach. Miami has some of Florida’s warmest waters and most beautiful coasts.

Depending on your preferences,  Miami offers a variety of possibilities for everyone. South Beach and Miami Beach are the two most popular beaches in the Miami area.

South Beach

This is one of the most popular beaches in the country and is loaded with restaurants, attractions, shops, and sights. It is a very welcoming, energetic, and trendy/upbeat city, so visitors shouldn’t be surprised by anything.

It is known for its thriving nightlife and abundance of bars and clubs on the strip.

Miami Beach

For visitors wanting a more relaxing and peaceful vibe on the beach, head north to Miami Beach. It is ideal for travelers who want to enjoy their time in Miami without all the craziness and upbeat energy that comes along with South Beach.

Crowds

Although South Beach and Miami Beach are the most popular beaches in Miami, there are numerous lesser-known and less-crowded parts of the shore in the Miami Beach area.

Thus, if you need some relaxation, you can often find a quiet location away from the crowds.

Christmas | New Year’s Eve | Holiday Specials

Many hotel restaurants provide excellent lunch and dinner service on Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve (some buffet, some a la carte).

Your best bet is to wait until late November and then start looking through the Christmas listings and menu options at OpenTable Miami. Typically in early December, they start to show menus for Christmas and New Year’s Eve and update them daily.

Fireworks: Miami Beach (seaside) and Miami (city) host music and fireworks at midnight on New Year’s Eve for free.

Additionally, there are various Holiday events happening throughout the entire month of December.

Most popular is the ever-so-famous “Santa’s Enchanted Forest,” the largest and only holiday-themed carnival in Florida, with thousands of lights and a multitude of games, rides, and snacks.

Miami also showcases thousands of twinkling lights at the “Miami Zoo” and the city also hosts the famous Nutcracker Ballet, available for viewing at the Adrienne Arsht Center.
