Packing Tips | Overview
There is not much snowfall in December here. However, you still need to dress for cold weather, especially in the second half of the month. Wear jeans, a sweater or hoodie over a light base layer, a winter hat such as a beanie, a winter coat, and comfortable, warm walking shoes like high-top sneakers or boots.
During December, a warm coat and layers are key. We also recommend a good bag with anti-theft features (see above).

Weather Overview
The weather in New York City in December is crisp and cold, and it may snow a little. In our experience, the beginning of the month is chilly and mild. Later, it gets colder. It’s best to wear a warm coat and layers when exploring the city.
Here are the average high temperatures for December in NYC:
- Early December: 49°F (10°C)
- Mid-December: 46°F (8°C)
- Late December: 42°F (5°C)
Good to know: Due to climate change, it’s not as cold in December as it was in the past. Now it gets freezing later in the winter and stays cold later into spring. The appropriate clothing also depends on whether you are in NYC in early or late December. That’s why we provide you with detailed tips later in the ‘What to Wear’ section below.
A Typical Day
A typical day in the city is cold and brisk, and it can be windy. In early December, the temperatures are usually in the low to mid-40s Fahrenheit (4°C to 8°C).
Note that temperatures can vary even within a day in NYC, as it is usually about 10 degrees (Fahrenheit) colder at night in December. Wearing layers ensures that you can change with the weather, adding or taking away a layer to stay comfortable.
Daily temperature progression on a typical December day in New York City:
- Early morning: 40°F (4°C)
- Afternoon (2 PM): 47°F (8°C)
- Evening (9 PM): 43°F (6°C)
Daylight | It Gets Dark Before 5 PM
December has the shortest days of the year here. The sun sets around 4:30 pm during the whole month. The earliest sunset is in the first week of December, at about 4:30 pm. At the end of the month, the sunset moves back to about 4:40 pm.
The good news: the Christmas lights are on very early. You can see the tree, the shop windows and the light displays at 5 pm, and you don’t have to stay out late with kids.
The bad news: the cold part of the day starts early too. Plan your warmest clothes for the evening, not for the middle of the day.
Rain

If you’re visiting New York City in December, there is a chance it will rain. There are, on average 8 rainy days during the month, so it’s good to be prepared with rain gear.
Snow
Although it’s the holiday season, you most likely won’t see snow in New York City during this month. It snows an average of two days, so there is still a chance you can get lucky and see snow. In our experience, if it snows here in December, it’s a light snowfall.
Good to know: It rains more than it snows. In fact, it snows more in January and February. December is now what November used to feel like, so it is a transitional month from cool to cold.
Morning, Afternoon, Evening
The temperature changes a lot inside one single day in December. The morning and the evening are cold. The afternoon is the mild part. So plan your outfit for the time of day, not for the whole day.
Morning (7 am to 10 am)
- Early December: around 38°F (3°C)
- Mid-December: around 34°F (1°C)
- Late December: around 31°F (-1°C)
This is the coldest part of your day. The sun is low and the streets stay in the shade for a long time.
Wear a base layer, a sweater or hoodie, and your winter coat. Take the beanie and the gloves with you, even if you think you don’t need them. Your hands get cold fast when you hold your phone for photos.
Afternoon (12 pm to 4 pm)
- Early December: 47°F to 49°F (8°C to 10°C)
- Mid-December: around 46°F (8°C)
- Late December: around 42°F (5°C)
This is the mild part of the day. In the sun and out of the wind, it can feel warmer than the number.
In early December, you can often open your coat and leave the base layer in your bag. In late December, keep the layers on, because the sun is weak and the mild part is short.
Evening (after 4:30 pm)
- Early December: around 43°F (6°C)
- Mid-December: around 39°F (4°C)
- Late December: around 36°F (2°C)
The sun is gone before 5 pm and the temperature drops quickly after that. This is also when most people go to see the lights, so you stand outside instead of walking.
Now you need everything: base layer, sweater, winter coat, scarf, hat and gloves.
💡 Our simple rule: dress for the evening, and carry a bag where you can put the extra layer during the afternoon.
Overheated Indoors
Most visitors pack for the cold outside and forget the heat inside. The subway platforms are warm, the trains are hot, and the shops, restaurants and museums are hot too.
So this happens: you walk 10 minutes in the cold, then you stand in a crowded store in your winter coat and you start to sweat. Then you go outside with a damp shirt, and now you are really cold.
What works better: layers you can open with a zip or buttons, a thin base layer plus a medium sweater instead of one very thick sweater, and a bag for the things you take off. In museums and theaters, use the coat check.
Essential Outfits | Packing Lists
Wear layers as the temperatures drop, especially later in the month.
Our basic tips:
- Jeans
- Sweater or hoodie over a light base layer
- Winter hat such as a beanie
- Winter coat
- Comfy and warm walking shoes

In early December, you most likely won’t need a base layer during the days. At night you will need layers to stay warm during any time of the month.
The weather is colder in mid to late December and at night-time, so you will need layers at those times.
💡 If you are visiting within the first half of the month, you will most likely need layers only at night but can forego them during the day. In the second half of the month, dress in layers during the day and night to stay warm.

Men Outfit Tips
For men visiting New York City in December, bring layers and comfortable walking shoes. A winter coat, jeans, sweater or hoodie, base layer, beanie, and some high-top sneakers or boots will keep you warm and comfortable on your trip.
Layering
Wear a fitted long-sleeved shirt as a base layer and top it with a hoodie (see our rec from Amazon above) or sweater to stay warm as you explore the city. With layers, you can take off your top layer on mild days and put it back on in the evening or if the temperature drops suddenly.
Coat
Pack a winter coat to stay warm during your winter trip to New York City. We like to wear puffer jackets to stay toasty, and a black puffer jacket is especially versatile for city life. Make sure your coat has pockets and a hood for extra protection from the wind.
Jeans
Add jeans to your suitcase when packing. Jeans are comfortable and warm, and you can add a sweater for more dressed-up situations or pull on a hoodie for a casual look.
Winter Gear
Put a winter hat and gloves in your bag, so you’re prepared for chilly December days and nights. A beanie is a popular hat for New Yorkers in the winter, as it keeps your head warm, and you can also make a style statement with it.
Shoes
High-top sneakers and a pair of boots will get you through your December trip in comfort and style. Just make sure your boots are good for walking.

New Year’s Eve at Times Square | What to Wear
If you want to see the ball drop from Times Square, this is the hardest outfit day of the whole year here. People arrive in the early afternoon and stand in the viewing areas until midnight. That means many hours outside, without walking.
The rules are strict, and they matter for your packing:
- Backpacks, large bags, umbrellas, folding chairs and alcohol are not allowed, and all bags get searched
- There are no public restrooms in the viewing areas
- If you leave your spot, you cannot go back in
So you cannot carry extra layers in a backpack. You have to wear everything from the start:
- Thermal base layer, top and bottom
- Sweater and your warmest coat, ideally with a hood, because umbrellas are not allowed
- Wool socks and insulated, water-resistant boots
- Hat, scarf and warm gloves
- Hand and toe warmers, and put the toe warmers in before you go
- A small crossbody bag instead of a backpack
- Eat before, and drink less than usual, because of the restroom situation
💡 If that sounds like too much: many bars, restaurants and hotels around Times Square sell New Year’s Eve packages with a view. They are not cheap, but you are warm, you can sit and you can use a restroom. Book these early, they sell out.
