Niagara Whirlpool

When Is the Best Time

The best time to visit Niagara Whirlpool is in the summer and fall, from dawn to dusk. We found that if you go early in the day, you’ll likely be the only people on the trail or near the gorge for a few hours, which offers an unspoiled view of the fierce water.

Is the Niagara Whirlpool Dangerous?

The Niagara Whirlpool which is formed below the falls is extremely dangerous. Due to the powerful currents, it’s unlikely to survive them. It’s definitely one of the most dangerous whirlpools on earth.

Review and More Tips

While all the visitors flock to Niagara Falls, head away from that attraction to find something wildly fascinating and take it in without a tourist in sight. Ironically, you will be visiting where the falls were 7,500 years ago.

The trail down to the whirlpool is rigorous, wearing boots with ankle support would be wise. Photos of the trail are included below. If the main trail is too much, there are several other options for viewing the whirlpool from higher above or longer, but less treacherous trails, as you move down closer to the water.

If you are like me, just be careful when climbing ever-closer to the amazing rushing waters. These aren’t waters you can fall in and get out of safely. Please use caution so that you can keep being an adventurer for a long time to come.

  • Seasons: Whirlpool State Park is open year-round. Sections of the gorge trail may not be accessible (or safe) during times of heavy rain or snow. The restrooms are open from mid-April through late October.
  • Best season to visit: Autumn for the foliage and fishing. Winter for Fishing. Summer to get away from the tourist crowds at the Falls.
  • Hours: Dawn to dusk. The park and trails are not lit by artificial light. The gorge trail is very hazardous at night.
