3. Viewing Christmas Trees
Christmas trees are a signature element of NYC’s holiday celebrations, and each has its own unique charm.
Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree
As the most iconic Christmas tree in the world, the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree needs no introduction. Towering at a height of between 70 and 100 feet, this Norway Spruce is adorned with thousands of LED lights and topped with a stunning Swarovski star. The tree lighting ceremony is an event in itself, featuring celebrity performances and massive crowds.
💡 Tip: For a less crowded view, try going early in the morning or late at night. The crowds are so intense at this popular New York City Christmas attraction, which detracts from the overall experience.
Washington Square Park Tree
Located under the Washington Arch, this tree offers a more laid-back and intimate experience. Lit with simple but charming lights, it serves as a local gathering spot and provides a different kind of holiday magic.
Tip: Don’t miss the caroling events that often take place here.
South Street Seaport Tree
Set by the East River waterfront, the South Street Seaport Tree brings holiday cheer to a historic part of the city. It’s less crowded than its Midtown counterparts, making it a peaceful spot for holiday photos.
Tip: This area is often windy, so bundle up.
Central Park Tree
Located at the Charles A. Dana Discovery Center, the Central Park Tree offers a serene and beautiful setting. It’s an ideal location for a quiet, romantic winter stroll.
Tip: The tree is near the Harlem Meer, which is a great place for a peaceful walk.
4. Going Christmas Shopping
NYC offers unparalleled shopping experiences, especially during the Christmas season.
Fifth Avenue
Fifth Avenue in New York City is a paradise for luxury shopping, especially during the Christmas season. This iconic street is home to the world’s most famous Tiffany & Co. store, which has been around since 1837 and is well-known from the movie “Breakfast at Tiffany’s.”
In addition to classic American designers like Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, and Michael Kors, you’ll find all the major international luxury brands here as well, such as Chanel, Prada, and Louis Vuitton. But don’t worry if you’re shopping on a budget; you can also find more affordable options like H&M and Banana Republic on 5th Avenue.
One of the street’s landmarks is Saks Fifth Avenue, a luxury department store that’s been a staple since 1924. Bergdorf Goodman and Henri Bendel are other must-visit department stores offering luxury items spread across multiple floors.
But what makes 5th Avenue truly special during the holiday season is its dedicated Christmas shop. This is the place to go for all kinds of Christmas decorations and ornaments. You’ll quickly notice that American Christmas trees are adorned quite differently—expect to see lots of glittering ornaments that practically cover the entire tree.
So, if you’re in NYC during Christmas, 5th Avenue is a shopping destination you won’t want to miss. It offers something for everyone, from high-end luxury items to more budget-friendly options, all set against the backdrop of the avenue’s lavish holiday decorations.
Tip: Don’t just shop; take a leisurely walk to enjoy the window displays.
Macy’s Herald Square
The Macy’s at Herald Square goes all out for Christmas. From Santa Land, where kids can meet Santa, to the intricate window displays and indoor decorations, it’s a feast for the senses.
Tip: If you’re planning to see Santa, go early in the season to avoid long lines.
Bloomingdale’s
Another retail giant, Bloomingdale’s creates fascinating window displays that change themes every year. The interior of the store also dazzles with festive decorations.
Tip: Late afternoon is a great time to catch both the window displays and in-store decorations.
5. Watching the Shows
The holiday season in NYC would be incomplete without its lineup of spectacular shows.
Radio City Christmas Spectacular
The Radio City Christmas Spectacular is a time-honored tradition featuring the Rockettes. The variety of performances blends classic scenes like the “Parade of the Wooden Soldiers” with new, tech-savvy numbers. Tip: Tickets can sell out fast, so book well in advance.
Nutcracker Ballet
The Nutcracker Ballet at the Lincoln Center is another must-see. The New York City Ballet’s rendition of this classic is renowned for its outstanding choreography, lavish sets, and costumes. Tip: Dress up a little; this is a classy affair.
A Christmas Carol
Different theaters around the city host this Dickens classic. Whether you catch it on Broadway or a smaller venue, the story’s message of redemption and holiday cheer comes through loud and clear. Tip: Some off-Broadway versions offer a more intimate setting.
7. Viewing the Decorations
The city goes all out when it comes to Christmas decorations, turning NYC into a holiday spectacle. Two great ones are:
Dyker Heights Christmas Lights
Located in Brooklyn, the Dyker Heights Christmas Lights are a community-driven spectacle. Homeowners in this neighborhood go all out to decorate their houses, making it a must-see destination.
Tip: Weekday evenings are less crowded.
Saks Fifth Avenue Light Show
The Saks Fifth Avenue Light Show is a choreographed light spectacle that covers the store’s entire facade. It’s both a visual and musical treat, as the lights dance in tune to classic Christmas carols.
Tip: Combine this with a trip to see the Rockefeller Center Tree, as they’re nearby.
Good to know: The best Christmas window displays are at Macy’s, Saks Fifth Avenue, the Empire State Building, and Bloomingdale. So, if you don’t have much time, visit these four.
8. Enjoying Christmas Cuisine
Indulge in the culinary delights of NYC that offer a range of traditional and unique Christmas meals.
Rolf’s German Restaurant
Known for extravagant Christmas decorations, Rolf’s serves up traditional German holiday dishes that make you feel like you’re dining inside a Christmas ornament.
Rolf’s definitely has the best Christmas decorations!
Lillie’s Victorian Establishment
The decorations in Lillie’s Victorian Establishment are just gorgeous!
As for food, expect to find everything from cheeseburgers and chicken wings to more sophisticated dishes like ceviche and tartar.
The Polo Bar
For a luxurious dining experience, The Polo Bar offers a menu full of holiday specials. The ambiance is filled with warm woods and leather, making it a cozy place to dine.
Serendipity 3
Famous for its frozen hot chocolate, this eclectic café offers a whimsical atmosphere and a holiday menu that both kids and adults will enjoy.
Bubby’s
If you crave a traditional American Christmas meal, Bubby’s is the place to go. They offer classic comfort foods that remind you of home-cooked holiday meals.
