Pecos National Historical Park

When Is the Best Time

Spring or fall present the best time and weather for exploring Pecos National Park, descending into the underground Ceremonial Kiva’s and hiking the trails.

Review and More Tips

Pecos is surrounded by woodlands of juniper, pinion, and ponderosa pine in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains just Southeast of Santa Fe New Mexico. Also near an old alignment of Historic Route 66, the remains of Indian pueblos stand as meaningful reminders of a people who once lived here.

Once designated only as Pecos National Monument, since 1990, it has been known as Pecos National Historical Park. Many significant natural and historical features are preserved here to help today’s visitors learn of the cultural and geographic facets central to the rich history of the Pecos Valley.

A natural draw for photographers, the main building on the grounds is the partially restored Mission Church. Its adobe walls date from the early 1600’s and have undergone many restorations over the centuries. Ceremonial Kiva’s – underground chambers thought to have been used for worship, are also accessible while visiting the park.
