Puerto Rico in December

Puerto Rico is a gem in the Caribbean, offering a unique blend of vibrant culture, rich history, and stunning natural beauty. While the island is a treat to visit any time of the year, December holds a special charm.

I live in Puerto Rico and picked up a friend from the airport last December who stayed here for two weeks. I used the taxi, and on our way back, the local cab driver took us to old San Juan in less than 30 minutes. After arriving in San Juan, my friend told me, that he already knew it was an awesome idea to visit this month!

Is December a Good Time to Visit?

Christmas trees decoration in San Juan, Old Town

December is a very good time to visit Puerto Rico. The hurricane season, which typically ends in late November, is behind us, making this month a safer and more predictable time for travel. Plus, the pleasant temperatures make it an ideal escape from the colder northern climates.

December is also one of the most festive times to visit Puerto Rico. There are plenty of beautiful holiday decorations, and the air is filled with the spirit of celebration.

December | Best Things to Do

We love these activities in Puerto Rico in December: Cruises, catamaran tours, and day trips to the rainforest.

The best thing we ever did is the following:

From San Juan: El Yunque Rainforest Tour

This tour was beyond awesome when we did it. Besides the breathtaking experience, the guides were so helpful, educational, and thoughtful!

Weather in December

The average high temps in December

In December, Puerto Rico enjoys mild and comfortable weather.

During December in Puerto Rico, the weather is warm and pleasant, with high temperatures from 84°F (29°C) to 87°F (31°C). On average, there are about 16 days of rain, with usually brief rain showers. It’s the dry season. The sun shines for 7 hours every day.

Night temps: Even at night, you will be able to enjoy your dinner and drinks outside without having to worry about ever getting too cold, as lows rarely drop below 73°F (23°C).

The official rainy season is over, but as Puerto Rico is in the tropics, there will surely be a few tropical afternoon rain showers with 20 rainy days on average in December. The south gets the least of the rain, with the north of the island and the mountains attracting the most rain.

During an afternoon rain shower, check out some of the fantastic local museums, and especially in December, there are endless events on offer. A must-see is the Christmas lights in the Old Town of San Juan.

Daytime average high temperatures in San Juan hover around:

  • Early December: 85°F (29°C)
  • Mid-December: 84°F (29°C)
  • Late December: 83°F (28°C)

While San Juan offers a coastal climate, the southern city of Ponce has temperatures that are slightly warmer:

  • Early December: 87°F (31°C)
  • Mid-December: 86°F (30°C)
  • Late December: 85°F (29°C)

During the night, it gets a little colder. Thus, mornings are cooler. The temperature progression on a typical December day in San Juan:

  • Morning (8 AM): 75°F (24°C)
  • Afternoon (1 PM): 83°F (28°C)
  • Night (11:30 PM): 76°F (24°C)
Rain
Clouds near near San Juan off the coast

December is the start of the dry season, but it still sees sporadic rain. However, showers are typically brief, allowing plenty of sunshine throughout the day. It’s always a good idea to pack a light rain jacket or umbrella, just in case.

Really, while the island gets some rain during this month, it’s usually not too much to much to spoil your trip.

On average, there are about 20 rainy days in the month, and the island receives around 3 to 4 inches of rain. These aren’t all-day downpours, though.

Typically, the rain showers are short, lasting about 30 minutes to an hour. They often happen in the afternoon, between 2 pm and 5 pm. So, if you’re planning outdoor activities, mornings are usually a safer bet.

The southern part of the island tends to be drier, while the north and the mountain areas get more rain. But remember, these showers pass quickly, and the sun usually pops right back out!

Humidity and Heat

December brings a slight decrease in humidity, making outdoor activities even more enjoyable. The coastal areas, like San Juan, offer a pleasant breeze, especially in the evenings.

Water Conditions | Swimming

The waters around Puerto Rico remain inviting in December. With ocean temperatures averaging 80°F (27°C), it’s perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and other water activities.

The swimming conditions are generally great during December in Puerto Rico. The water is cooler than in the summer months, which is definitely a plus.

Currents: Keep an eye out for currents, as they become stronger in winter. However, don’t be worried, as we put together the safest beaches in December/Winter.

💡 Please check out our ‘safe beach tips’ at the end of this article!

What to Wear and Pack | Outfits

It’s warm in December. Bring light, summer clothing for any daytime activities.

Wear lightweight and loose clothing for your daytime activities during December in Puerto Rico. Pack t-shirts, tank tops, and shorts. For indoors with air conditions and nights, bring long sleeves and pants.

💡 Light materials or even dry fit work great in December. In my experience, most visitors get uncomfortable with how warm it actually is and sweat a lot. So cool clothes and light fabrics are a must!

Local opinion: In my personal experience, tourists that come from colder climates tend to be hot all the time. For us locals, it feels cold in December sometimes.

It’s warm in December. However, the mountain regions get lower temps, and restaurants and other indoor spaces love their air-conditioning, so bring a light sweater or a light jacket and a pair of long pants.

Do you need rain gear?

No rain gear is needed in December. It’s too hot! Most of us locals use an umbrella, or we just wait 5 min for the rain to pass.

However, keep in mind that, you can get drenched at any time of the year, even in December. But rain won’t last long in general, like 5-15 minutes usually.

Tip: Since you should bring a light jacket anyway, we recommend packing a light rain jacket. Our tips:

Other suggestions from friends:

Relax when you visit in December. You will need a sweater, jacket, shawl, or wrap only for air-conditioned supermarkets, medical offices, and restaurants.

Umbrella and/or raincoat? Not necessary, in my opinion.

Cooler temps: Long pants or dresses are recommended for the nights and air-conditioned restaurants etc.

💡 You solve your packing problems for December very easily with a pair of jeans and a light jacket. That’s what we locals use during this month.

Shoes: It is my humble recommendation that you choose comfort over style (at least when you can). You will probably walk a lot, and your feet will thank you in the long run.

Of course, do not forget your swimsuits! Whether it’s the beaches, which are great in December, a pool, or a river, you will definitely want to have one handy.

Crowds

Isla Verda, San Juan can get busier. However, you can still find quiet spots!

December is the beginning of the peak tourist season in Puerto Rico, especially from mid-December. As travelers seek warmer climates, popular spots can get busy.

However, the festive atmosphere, with parades, music, and dance, more than makes up for the crowds.

Our Xmas season basically lasts from Nov 15 till the third week in January (ends with SanSe Festival). If you want to escape crowds in December, leave the metro San Juan area and go to the beaches or restaurants during the week.

We highly recommend booking accommodations and activities in advance:

Things to Do

Fried tacos in Puerto Rico, filled with fish, crabs, meat, …

Trust us when we say this: In Puerto Rico, you can go to the beach any day of the year. And while you want to dive into the warm waters (or cold ones if you like rivers), we encourage you to attend local events that only occur during the winter.

The Food

Although traditionally, Puerto Ricans eat rice and beans on a daily basis, in December, cooks all over introduce the holiday season menu: traditional roasted pork (or chicken), rice with gandules (pigeon peas), and pasteles.

It is a feast locals have all through December until the season ends!

If you want to enjoy this local cuisine and have a good time with music and a celebration vibe, you have to do La Ruta del Lechón Asado (The Route of the Roasted Pork). It takes you along Route 184 in the city of Cayey up to the mountains. This is known as Guavate.

You will find the best lechoneras (places that sell slow roasted pork) in the whole island.

Keep in mind, this experience is available every week. But, during the holiday season, it may be crowded due to an influx of visitors, such as yourself, and Puerto Ricans that are visiting their families from abroad.

The Holidays

In case you didn’t know, people say that Puerto Rico has the longest Christmas season in the world. And that’s because we alreaedy started in November and end almost in February.

December brings a lot of festivities that you might enjoy as soon as you arrive. Especially, if you like to immerse yourself in the culture of the destinations you visit.

Thanksgiving and Christmas are a big deal to locals, and you’ll notice it in the decorations and the music. You will start to see Christmas decorations in almost every town square. One of my favorite ones is La Plaza de Mayagüez, on the west side of Puerto Rico (2 and a half hours from San Juan).

Almost every town puts up Christmas lights and decorations around City Hall and the plaza, sets up stages for live music and performances, and hosts different activities for families. And obviously, there’s glorious local food! It is our own version of a “winter wonderland”.
