Suilven

When Is the Best Time

Suilven can be visited year-round, there is no specific time.

However, the best time to visit is in the morning: You just have to see what she (Suilven) looks like in the morning when you get up: Great and climbable?  She always seems to have a cloud hat on, even in the summer.

Suilven is only 731 meters high, but it’s one of the finest mountains in Scotland. Its stunning views make it even more fascinating. There is also plenty of wildlife to see, when I was up last year at the end of July and the start of August we saw different species of Dragon flies, colorful hairy Caterpillars, a slow worm, and plenty of beetles.

Regarding the visiting time: I was talking to a man one day I met on a hill while out climbing and he said he had been to Assynt twice to stay so that he could climb Suilven and it never happened because of the weather in the summer.

How Long Does the Hike Take?

The hike takes usually about 6 to 8 hours and depends on your level of fitness. The walk begins in the car park in front of the Glencanisp lodge. In the first part of the walk, you just have to stick to the stalkers’ path. After few miles, there is a bridge over the river, and after a while, you encounter a small cairn on the right side of the road. In this place, you have to turn right to the boggy ground and walk to the bottom of the mountain. There you will see a zig-zag path up the hill. When you reach the col, turn right and walk the path to the very top. This is only one of many possible ways to reach the top.
