Old Man of Storr

When Is the Best Time

Old Man of Storr can be walked all year in good weather. The best season for the hike is the time between May and November. Then you walk through fascinating forests and lush slopes until you reach the mystical rocky terrain.

The best time of day ist to visit is early in the morning since it is maybe the only time you will not meet a large number of tourists heading to the place.

The Old Man of Storr is one of the most famous attractions on the Isle of Skye. It is a rocky formation lying below the mountain of Storr. The start of the walk to the Old Man is in the parking lot on the A855 road from Portree to Staffin.

The path up is good but can be muddy in wet weather.

3 Top Tips
  1. You should plan about three hours for the round trip. The hike to the Old Man of Storr is not strenuous. However, you should have a little sense of direction, as the path is not always marked. If you are traveling with the whole family, stay close together.
  2. Wear sturdy hiking boots that are waterproof. Your feet can get wet otherwise, especially on the way back. Children will have a great time on this tour and can really enjoy this hike.
  3. Remember to bring enough drinking water and provisions, as you are in pristine nature and there are no refreshment stops. However, there are many beautiful picnic areas with fantastic views.

  1. I recommend to start the hike at 6 am. The sunrise is great on the Old Man as well. I heard of the other path as well. I never walked it, so I will tell you what I remember. It should start on the A855 road approximately half a mile before the car park under the Old Man. I remember people told me it is quite boggy, but I can’t tell. The path lead up along the forest, which is now unfortunately cut down. But I guess it will not be a problem to find this path up. Cheers.
