Las Vegas April Outfits | Tips

April is the last truly beautiful month to experience spring in Las Vegas before temperatures rapidly start to climb for a traditional desert summer.

Prepare to be comfortable or slightly warm in the afternoons with some T-shirts and jeans, but also plan for early morning and late night chills with one or two jackets and other layers.

Weather Overview

Temperature progression from March to April and May. By Weathersparks. You can see the Paris Las Vegas Eiffel Tower in the background. Its scale is 1:2

Temperatures are climbing in the desert city, while the cloud cover and rainfall are falling.

Only about 20% of the days are fully overcast in Las Vegas; this is lower than in other US regions. On four out of five days, you will at least see the sun for some time.

‘We always visit at the beginning of April. The weather is usually great as it’s not too hot and perfect for wandering around. We always have pool days and get a nice tan.’

Chances of rain are even lower, around 4% daily. Since Las Vegas is located in the Mojave Desert, the humidity levels are low. The temperatures reach about 81°F in the afternoon and hover around 62°F when you get up at 8 AM in the morning.

These temperatures and a light desert breeze are perfect for strolling through the city midday and afternoon. When temperatures are lower in the evenings and mornings, you may choose activities inside or outside with the appropriate clothing.

Temperatures: April is the first actual spring month, temperatures are on the rise throughout the month on the transition between winter and summer:

  • Early April: 75°F (23.9°C)
  • Mid-April: 79°F (26.1°C)
  • Late April: 84°F (28.9°C)

In the desert, temperatures fall drastically during the nighttime. That’s why mornings and evenings are considerably colder. This is what a day could look like:

Early April:

  • 8 AM: 59°F (15°C)
  • 12 PM: 71°F (22°C)
  • 4 PM: 75°F (24°C)
  • 10 PM: 64°F (18°C)

Late April:

  • 8 AM: 64°F (18°C)
  • 12 PM: 76°F (24°C)
  • 4 PM: 81°F (27°C)
  • 10 PM: 69°F (21°C

Weather summary from a local: The last week of April almost always has great weather, while the first two weeks of the month can be unpredictable in terms of winds and temperature.

Precipitation: Temperatures are well above freezing for the whole month, so it will not snow. Las Vegas being a desert city, receives only small amounts of rainfall in the form of light showers. It rains on only about 5% of days at the start of the month and 3% of days in late April.

Wind: Average wind speeds stay at about 9 mph throughout the month. Wind speeds pick up during the day in the desert. So in the afternoon, the wind will lower the feel-like temperatures. Since temperatures are high enough in April, there is nothing to worry even with some wind.

Weather and Clothing Reports from Visitors
  • I was there in mid-April and was wearing shorts/t-shirts the whole time. The only issue I had was the wind, as it was pretty bad at times with summer clothes on.
  • When I visit in April, it is mostly sunny during the day. However, after 6 PM it gets a little colder. I always advise carrying a light jacket with you, especially if you plan to get back to your hotel late at night: Our April Jacket Tips for Vegas | AMAZON
  • I find that April is short and t-shirt weather in the sun. Also great for swimming in pools on sunny days. However, step into a shadow, and you do feel the cold. Also, I suggest changing into trousers and putting on a light jacket once the sun goes down.
  • The weather is always perfect for us in April. Although last year, it was a little breezy, which happens.

Outfit Tips and Packing Guide

Whether you’re waking up early or staying up late, dressing in layers is essential.

Las Vegas in April means you are wearing shorts and short-sleeved t-shirts in the afternoon. Pack a light jacket or a sweater for mornings and late evenings that you can shed or put on when needed.

Visitor report: Shorts and T-shirts work mostly during the day in April. However, I always bring a windbreaker or another light jacket if needed. Sometimes, it just sits in the closet.

Las Vegas wastes no time in warming up as the weeks go by once winter is over. While you will need at least one comfortable light jacket or sweater on your trip, you should be fine to walk around in just a T-shirt or thin long-sleeve on your trip, especially if you will spend most of your time in the sun.

If you come from a northern or midwestern part of the United States, you will be content to explore the city in a tank top and shorts, but we recommend having a sweater with you for when you encounter some shade or the chilly casino air conditioning.

💡 While it will no longer be hoodie weather, layering your daily outfits is still the safest bet.

A Typical Day

Mornings

When you’re leaving your hotel in the morning for breakfast or whatever morning activities you have planned, you should be comfortable with a T-shirt under a jacket or sweatshirt.

Our Spring Jacket Tips for Vegas | AMAZON

The morning will still be cool, thanks to the lingering overnight temperatures, so pants will feel better than shorts or a skirt.

Afternoons

Midday will be warm enough for you to take off your outer jacket or sweater, especially if you are visiting later in the month. If you are visiting in early April and anything near 70°F is still too cold for you, you will benefit from bringing a thinner sweater or cardigan with you to swap with your jacket.

As the afternoon wears on, temperatures normally peak for the day around 3 or 4 PM. You should be comfortable walking around in your base layer by this time even if you haven’t stripped off your outer layers yet.

But if you’re visiting in early April or if the afternoon isn’t very sunny, you will want your cardigan or jacket handy to keep off any chill in the air.

Once the sun goes down for the evening at around 6 PM, you will want to re-apply your layers as the night wears on, especially if you are visiting on a windier day.

Evenings

For your late evening activities, you may want the chance to return to your hotel room to change into a dressier outfit, especially if you plan on going out and enjoying the Strip’s nightlife.

Consider changing into nice closed-toed shoes or boots, smart pants or trousers, and a blouse or collared long-sleeved shirt that will pair well with your jacket. Even if you don’t feel cold enough to wear the jacket right away, bring it with you to layer up later.

Tip for the ladies: Afternoons can also get pretty windy, so if you plan on wearing a flowy dress, you may want to pack some undershorts! Bring your nicest clothes for nighttime activities like dinner and a show, or going out to bars and clubs.

Accessories | Bags

Bring a suitable bag in February! You will need one for carrying water, your wallet, phone, jacket, and hand sanitizer.

💡 Vegas is a mecca for pickpockets! That’s why we always suggest a bag with anti-theft features (see our recommendations in the table above) to keep your belongings safe in the city!

Excursion Outfits

Powered by GetYourGuide

Las Vegas isn’t just a national gem because of the Strip. While the Strip and downtown area can provide great nightlife, entertainment, and cuisine, much of Las Vegas’ value lies in its local scene and natural sights. You should plan an outdoor excursion if you can on your trip, whether it’s hiking through Red Rock Canyon or Mount Charleston or kayaking through Lake Mead.

If you’re planning an outdoor adventure, it’s extremely important to consider your attire and supplies, especially because it may be a bit of a drive back to your hotel if you forget anything important, like water or a sweater.

Regardless of your planned activities, make sure you are wearing comfortable walking shoes and warm clothes you can move freely in.

Women should wear leggings or stretchy pants for freedom of movement, a comfortable sports bra, and a long- or short-sleeved athletic shirt. These kinds of shirts are convenient because they are not restrictive and work for different kinds of weather.

Women’s Athletic Shirt Tips | AMAZON

Men should plan to wear joggers or sweatpants and a long- or short-sleeved athletic shirt to layer with a light jacket. Everyone should come prepared with thick, comfortable socks and supportive walking or hiking shoes.

Whether you want to plan on wearing a T-shirt or long-sleeve will depend on your destination. If you plan on hiking, Mount Charleston will be about 10 degrees cooler than Red Rock thanks to its high altitude. We recommend wearing a long-sleeve and a jacket if you plan on exploring Mount Charleston.

If you are taking a hike through Red Rock, leggings or pants paired with a T-shirt will work fine. While you should bring a jacket for the beginning of your hike, you will find that you will not need it for most of the hike as you will begin to heat up, especially if the sun is beating down on you.

Even if you don’t plan on wearing a sweater or jacket, it’s a great idea to throw one in your backpack or your car, as winds or clouds can make a difference in the “feels like” temperature. Regardless of your destination, it’s always better to take more layers than fewer, because you can always take off an outer layer if the exercise raises your body temperature.

Another important thing to consider is wearing a hat and sunglasses — regardless of the time of year you visit, you will find the sunshine to be a very strong companion on your time outdoors.

💡 Tip: Even if you don’t think the weather is too cold and want to wear shorts and a short-sleeved shirt, we recommend covering up as much skin as possible, especially when hiking, to protect yourself from bugs, plants, and other flora and fauna you may come into contact with in the wild desert.

Sun protection: April might not be very hot (like July, the hottest month in Vegas), but the city has an average of over 300 days of sunshine per year. If you plan on being outside a lot, bring sunscreen and a pair of sunglasses. You could always buy some when you arrive, but prices on the strip are always inflated.

Good to know/walking: Many tourists choose to walk the strip but don’t realize the entire distance is over 4 miles long. That doesn’t include walking through the casinos! Make sure to bring a pair of comfortable shoes or plan on hailing a rideshare to save your feet.

You will definitely not need anything like a winter or thicker medium jacket when visiting in April, even for the chilly mornings in the earlier part of the month.

💡 However, it’s a good idea to bring one light jacket or sweatshirt and one thin cardigan that you can layer with most of the other outfits you’ve packed.

You will find that the temperatures can get cool enough in the mornings and evenings to warrant some long sleeves, not to mention the frigid air conditioning that the casinos blast year-round.

As spring rolls into the Vegas valley around this time, we find that most people are comfortable with a T-shirt and a jacket or cardigan they can take on and off in April.

Tip: Keep in mind the weather will not feel the same in the afternoons as it does in the mornings, especially in mid- to late April. The mornings let you catch the last bit of sweater weather that the city will have for a while, but by noon, you will not want that sweater anymore.

The weather is beautiful enough to be comfortable in a T-shirt or blouse, so make sure you are wearing something under your jacket that you’re comfortable walking around in during your day excursions around the city.

Sneakers and Boots

Sneakers aren’t your only option for comfortable footwear if you want some variety. There are plenty of boots that are comfortable and can be used in the day or evening time.

Tip: If you prefer wearing sandals, make sure you pick a comfortable pair with good support since you will likely be doing plenty of walking around.

Personal Experiences and Tips

Get creative with your outfits: My boyfriend is someone who enjoys fall and winter weather because of the outfits he gets to wear. If you are anything like him, you may love putting together outfits that center around an impressive beanie and jacket or coat.

When Las Vegas starts to get warm, he hates having to swap his favorite attire for plain T-shirts. He found that investing in nice flannels over a T-shirt is a great way to wear thin sleeves that keep him warm in the morning but don’t have him sweating and overheating by the toastier afternoons. Flannels are also very easy to roll up or put in a bag if you really need to cool down.

Sunscreen is still important: While you won’t be sweating during your spring trip to Las Vegas, that doesn’t mean the sun isn’t packing a punch.

When I visited Las Vegas in the springtime, my skin was covered up with long-sleeves and pants nearly the entire time, so I wasn’t too worried about sun exposure. But if you plan on walking around outdoors for much of your trip, pack some sunscreen at least for your face and neck.

After just a few hours of being outdoors, my skin got a little pink and irritated, and I had to go out and buy some SPF for the rest of my trip.

Pro tip: Many moisturizers have SPF in them, and I would recommend buying one of those for some dual action. Your skin will thank you, since the desert air is very, very drying.

Don’t bother with extra winter attire: I would have saved some space in my suitcase if I had left some gloves, beanies, and thick winter socks at home.

Even though I visited Vegas in early spring, I overestimated how cold it would be, because I am unfamiliar with desert weather. While some mornings and nights were chilly enough to warrant a jacket and pants, I wasn’t at risk of my fingers, toes, or ears going numb. Much of the heavy winter clothing I packed went unused.

Plan on sweaters and a few layers and you will be fine!

Conclusion

April is the last truly beautiful month to experience spring in Las Vegas before temperatures rapidly start to climb for a traditional desert summer. Prepare to be comfortable or slightly warm in the afternoons with some T-shirts and jeans, but also plan for early morning and late night chills with one or two jackets and other layers. Your non-negotiable items in your suitcase should include a hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, and very comfortable walking shoes.
